Audison SR – Hi-res Amp for the Masses
The Audison SR 6.600 amplifier redefines audio quality for class D technology. In blind testing, it performed better than its class AB predecessor. It has proved itself to be an essential tool when installers are looking for a single-box solution for a multi-channel system.
At just 314mm X 155mm X 47.5mm, the SR 6.600 amplifier remains compact despite the additional space required by an updated power supply. Its six-channels provide four outputs of 65 watts and a further two-channels at 75 watts all into a 4ohm load. This makes it possible to run a front 3-way speaker system. In five-channel mode it will drive a front 2-way system with bridged channels to feed a subwoofer.
Class D is happy to run into lower impedances and at 2 ohms, the output becomes 140watts x 4 + 185watts x 2. Channels 5 & 6 may also be bridged to run a 1ohm subwoofer system at 600 watts.
More bridging options are possible, offering fewer channels with even more power.
The amplifier can be configured for automatic remote turn on, powering up when a signal is received on its inputs. Some modern-day head units require a load on all of their speaker inputs at all times, and so a universal speaker simulator is built-in to the amplifier.
Three stereo inputs, (A, B, & C) accept either line signals up to 8volts or speaker level inputs up to 40volts. An input sensitivity control is included to optimise the source level to the amplifier. Input A features an adjustable Hi-pass filter with a bandwidth of 50Hz – 500Hz with a slope of 12dB/octave. Input B also features an adjustable Hi-Pass filter of the same spec but also an adjustable Band-pass filter with bandwidth of 50-700Hz on it’s “lo” setting and 50Hz – 5KHz when “hi” is selected. Filter slopes are 12dB/oct. All filters can be switched out.
Other adjustments include a variable 0-180 degree phase setting, 50Hz boost and a subsonic filter. These controls are accessible via a removable top plate for in-situ adjustments. Optional sub-level and volume controls can be added for fingertip control by the driver.
Despite the comprehensive adjustments available, DSP can be a great addition to get the best out of your car audio upgrade. Certainly, value offered by the SR 6.600 makes this a fantastic option. We have heard a number of Audison SR amplifiers, and can confirm that they sound every bit as good as the claims made by Audison.
