Hertz Mille Power – ML 5
The Hertz Mille Power ML 5 power amplifier is perfect for driving a system using Mille Speakers and subwoofers. It came about because Hertz felt that there was not an amplifier on the market that offered the amount of control and stable power required to drive the Mille speaker range correctly.
Typically, despite claims from some manufacturers, amplifiers were typically under powered. There were also many fine performance details that meant that Mille speakers were not performing as well as possible.
The Hertz ML 5 amplifier features advanced class D technology. This manages to optimise the power available at the output stage while remaining power efficient. The compact die cast and Aluminium extruded heatsink is more than enough to keep temperatures stable and well within safe limits. This negates the use of cooling fans.
The advanced power supply design is capable of handling heavy bass transients without choking or compression. This adds a clarity and precision to low-end performance. It also means there is plenty of power available for clear and precise mids and high frequencies.
The beauty of a configurable 5-channel amplifier is that it gives an installer the flexibility and choices to make it the beating heart of a system.
The holy grail for many is to run front speakers actively. This allows signals to be split and processed using a standalone signal processor. This offers absolute control but I can also be quite complex to set up. Some purists prefer to use the passive crossovers supplied with Mille speakers. The argument that Hertz wouldn’t sell them if they weren’t good is hard to argue with. We know that almost as much design effort goes into the crossovers as into the drivers themselves. However, discrete crossover networks need housing somewhere so in physical terms there is not much difference.
From a cost perspective, the benefits are huge. You would have to be satisfied to live without time alignment. Time alignment can be extremely useful if you are setting the vehicle up for different listening positions. A general “everybody” setting is not a terrible idea though and depending on the size of your vehicle and speaker mounting positions, the passive route may be the way to go.
As with all Hertz Amplifiers, some channels of the ML 5 maybe bridged to deliver extra power. Running a system passively, channels 1&2 and channel 3&4 can be bridged to develop 200 watts RMS into 4 ohms on each side of a pair of stereo speakers.
Meanwhile, the fifth channel is used to power a subwoofer. This developes 380 watts RMS into 4 ohms. However, Class D amplifiers are perfectly happy running into 2 ohms. With this lighter load the fifth channel will output 550 watts RMS. That should be enough for the keenest bass head. However, as always, power is better used for control than sheer volume. The Mille subs are beasts but the ML 5 subwoofer channel offers plenty of power to excite them!
One of the installers greatest challenges these days, is picking up an audio signal feed from the on-board head unit. The ML 5 is equipped with speaker inputs. These have a sensitivity of 0.8 to 20 V offering plenty of headroom for high power factory fit units. The speaker level inputs are balanced. This offers a significant level of noise rejection in the case of noisy signal feeds!
Hi pass and lo pass filters are featured allowing installers added flexibility when configuring a system. All in all, this versatile 5-channel is an installers dream. More importantly, it does its work extremely competently with little fuss. Build quality and resilience come as standard with all Hertz products. This removes any worry from the user. If installed by a FOUR MASTER, the equipment and install comes with a lifetime, transferrable warranty too. What could possibly go wrong?
