Hertz Mille Pro – Car Speakers For Discerning Ears

Hertz is a brand that has always put its customers first. Products are not designed on whim. Developing a new product is a lengthy and costly exercise and so identifying a need is an extremely important factor before undertaking such a project.
For once however, the need for Hertz Mille Pro was easy to see. Mille has always been an important “reach up” product for music lovers looking for something special. This desire led to Mille Legend taking the brand a little higher than with past Mille ranges. A hole was left for those looking for an upgrade from Cento but not quite being able to stretch budgets to Legend!

As with all Hertz development programmes, the starting point is always trying to find ways of incorporating their high-end technologies. Materials used and production techniques are taken apart and reassessed in an effort to make a product cheaper with as little compromise on quality as possible. The development team was offered a huge challenge, to make a range that aspired to the critically acclaimed Legend range but at a smaller price.
Mille Pro woofers have an impedance of 3 ohms which is unusual. With the proliferation of class-D amplifiers with more tolerant operating load parameters, this offers the pro range a better efficiency figure. This means they require slightly less power to get them really going. V-cone technology remains a significant technology that not only helps to maintain cone stiffness during heavy transients and excursion but also helps with dispersion. This is vital in order to compensate for arbitrary mounting positions in most vehicles.
Other mechanical similarities with its big brother are an oversized, boundary-free surround. This further helps with heavy excursion and dispersion. The crossover also received much attention. It is very common for installers to use Digital Signal Processors (DSP) to look after setting crossover frequencies. These allow for a lot of other parameters to be “dialled in” . However, DSP’s can be expensive and those on a budget should not discount using the crossover networks designed to eek the best out of the speakers.
A slightly smaller diameter tweeter (25mm) looks after high frequencies. However, despite this, many technologies from the Legend range trickle down into this tweeter. The result is similar in terms of natural reproduction and openness of sound although the slightly lesser frequency response may mean giving up on some of the nuance and timbre achievable with the Legend tweeter.

We were able to have a good listen to Mille Pro and create an article some time ago. Despite some challenges provided by the vehicle’s electronics, we loved them! You can download this free of charge here: https://www.drivingsounds.co.uk/articles/driving-sounds-issue-6/seat-of-all-learning/
